Ethical Decision-Making

Introduction

This framework will guide me when making decisions and when I encounter ethical dilemmas in child and youth care advocacy. Ethical dilemmas may occur when the rights, needs, or safety of children and youth conflict with the expectations of families, organizations, community members, or legal requirements. My goal is to make productive decisions that protect young people’s rights and well-being while considering cultural differences, professional responsibilities, and the possible consequences of my actions.

Steps for Identifying and Analyzing Ethical Issues

  1. I will begin by clearly identifying the situation and the ethical concerns involved in the situation. I will gather all relevant information, distinguish facts from assumptions, and identify anyone involved who may be affected by the decision. I will consider whether the issue involves confidentiality, discrimination, power imbalances, informed consent, safety, fairness, or rights.
  2. Before deciding how to respond, I will review legislation, policies, and professional ethical standards. I will consider the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, relevant legislation for the region, privacy requirements, and child protection policies.
  3. I will reflect on my own assumptions, biases, values, and possible influences. I will consider how culture, identity, disability, gender, socioeconomic status, and discrimination may affect the situation.
  4. I will seek guidance from supervisors, colleagues, or relevant professionals as openness to feedback is important. I will listen to the perspectives of those affected while maintaining confidentiality and sharing only necessary information.
  5. After evaluating the options, I will choose the most ethical and legally appropriate course of action. I will involve the young person in the process as much as possible while maintaining appropriate boundaries. I will develop an action plan that identifies the steps to be taken, the people responsible, and any necessary additional support. If immediate safety is at risk, I will take protective action according to related regulations or laws.
